1  Trapping / General Trapping / Re: Trappin on: December 09, 2019, 05:58:23 PM
Thanks Coonman!   sounds like you are the same timeline as me!  Dec is the start month usually.   less people in woods.   coons off feeders, no corn.   back to normal..

me, looks like it will be only a few local sets near the house for a beaver or 2 for eating..   and to remember how to skin! LOL

been 5 yrs since i knifed a fur critter.   seems like a lifetime..   sure miss it, being cold, wet, driving in the dark from a 20 hr day...  yep!   sure miss the " good ole days"...

Smiley  but, tripping up a beaver or 4-5 of em...    and the possibility of an otter?   can't resist..

Actually may get to do some trapping this year!   been a WHILE for me with the new job duties in MGMT.. 5 yrs... seem like a lifetime since i set steel...     Scouted a farm for water sets to help a friend last night... got some promise, a few otter, and more beaver than i can set for... should be an easy gig to get back into the swing of it...     hoping price does a jump so i dont have to skin/ store it much...

time, is money in this type game. specially with pricing low...!        GOOD LUCK newbies and oldbies!      Its fun no matter what!   TL
3  Trapping / General Trapping / Re: Last night 2017-2018 on: December 10, 2017, 09:36:29 PM
Finally, Cool weather and no mosquitos!   Trapping can begin!    Hunters clearing the woods, somewhat too.

I sooo miss trapping!   Mgmt drawback for me.   I can now afford the things i want to buy:)  but no time to use them! LOL

I hope all setting steel are getting the frosty morning memories, and the surprise sets catches!    have fun and enjoy a pastime i have loved for 38 yrs!

Arkansas has the best all around trapping woods/ fields/ creeks/ mtns.  i have ever seen!    and tons of critters out there...

Sad to see prices low, but i never did trap so much for the $$..   it was for the bobcat, frosty morning field catch by the toe... and him all fuzzed up when i get there!   priceless!.
4  News and Announcements / ATA / Re: The ATA lost a longtime member this morning on: November 16, 2017, 07:09:09 AM
Miss Charlotte's visitation will be from 5-7 pm Thursday November 16th at Youngs Funeral Home in EL DORADO, AR

Funeral will be Friday 10 AM.   SILVER HILL< AR        Methodist Church..

Heaven is brighter today with this WONDERFUL Woman there!   She is an inspiration to me, and meeting her and Williard in 2009 at Russellville was a blessing i will never forget...

She Always smiled, and laughed and told a joke when i met her!.  She served anywhere she could on the ATA for many many years...  I saw her in late September in Smackover, Ate lunch with her and Christie.. and talked over old times. and her Williard.   i know JESUS has her in HIS arms today... and another angel got their wings!    Rest, friend.   I will see you when....  TL

looks like someone who likes buying LOTS of lure! Thumbs Up!
6  Trapping / Fur Handling / Re: Dynamics of an Arkansas cat market on: February 19, 2017, 05:27:26 PM
a whole cat has a marketable value to a larger group. so more demand...

also, Spots around the side to the back, less stripes and " Rabbit Back" are items looked for....

my humble opinion, from watching buyers, talking after sales, and seeing fur sheds from long time sellers, and buyers...

I've see pay $300 and up for cats w no holes, just to get one someone wants to mount... $ for $600..   some folks got LOTS more money than i do... Smiley
part of trapping, is knowing what u have, and how to market it...

the first beaver hides i sold was out of my moms trunk in England ar at 14 yrs old.   i got 3 dollars for it.. i worked almost 3 hrs getting that beaver skinned, on  a tailgate of my truck w a dull knife... i didn't know better, and no one to tell me how...  no ATA, no sharing of data and knowledge, all self taught from 100's of hours in the field each winter looking at sign...  Support the ATA!   all the way...  they support the trapper community GREATLY. one Workshop when i was 39 taught me more than 5 yrs trapping as a youngun.
7  Trapping / General Trapping / Bismarck ND right now... foot of snow, drifts to 5 ft, 40mph winds & 6 degrees on: December 06, 2016, 09:33:13 AM
So, my job has me sitting in a HI Express in Bismarck, ND in a blizzard with no real estimate on when the INTERSTATE will open again.

never been up here, kinda a different experience.   packed coveralls and Pac boots  and long johns as Country boys do;  BUT   nothing can prepare a flat lander/ Arkansawian for THIS mess!    GEEZ.

trapping in this, is a YOUNG mans GAME... for certain..      hopeful the wind will subside by dark, allow the plows to clear the interstate so i can head 900 miles back to airport and fly home..  I miss Dec down South. and skeeters at Christmas..

on a good note, it was beautiful up here, Before this stuff set in yesterday morning at 3 am..
Montana, and Wyoming...   simply Breathtaking.   seen a crossover on Montana/ Wyoming line Saturday noon. 40 degrees, High skies and a culvert under highway.   prettiest Cat track right at the mouth of it in the sage grass along road,   made me start to get the Itch..   Smiley   enjoy.
8  Trapping / General Trapping / Re: by thaaaaat much. on: December 06, 2016, 09:21:25 AM
BOY!  that was CLOSE.     but as my friend says" traps are patient, and work 24 hrs a day"    tomorrow perhaps your line will be tight..

12  Trapping / General Trapping / Re: Long Spring or coil spring? on: February 19, 2016, 12:34:05 AM
Started 34 yrs ago with Paw Paw's WELL used Newhouse LS 1.5 in the creek next to grandma's.  a 10ft piece of tyewire and a can of mustard sardines for a nickel.  Funnest 3 weeks of my short life at that time of 10 yrs old...   I think i caught every housecat in the whole country at least once!   but when i connected w that first fur.  i was hooked...Smiley  now i have found i am a Carrier of the disease...Smiley  and infected my 7 yr old son back in 2008..  with the ATA  and joining up that year, and SO MANY Awesome folks who mentor the last 8 yrs, I am a lifetime fur trapper now... maybe 1 trap a yr, maybe 10,000 acres under steel, but i am chasing fur every time that temp starts to dip, or every road ditch i stop and wet a hook in.   Searchin' for Sign comes as natural as eating Taters.     I'll chase it until i am ancient , then i will pass along that old LS, and that  can of Mustard Sardines to the next 10 yr old...    Smiley      TL

14  Trapping / General Trapping / LIVE beavers requested for stocking. hwy 79 and althiemer..area.. on: December 13, 2015, 07:56:15 PM
anyone know someone that could supply live beavers for restocking an area?  i had a landowner ask me about getting beavers back in a duck area he has, that mysteriously had the beavers leave recently..  no fresh sign in s while, he says..  it's only 3 ft deep.  about 1/4 acre...  but held Ducks for him to hunt on and he wants to get it back w beavers...    anyone able to trap live, and transplant unharmed?    tks

let the fun begin,  i know some of you will have fun with this...
